The Charlie Brown Emergency Services Foundation (CBESF) was created by the family and friends of Charles “Charlie” Douglas Brown Jr. to highlight and promote the character and dedication of Charlie Brown to his community and to support the numerous emergency service providers in our state and community. Deputy Charlie Brown of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office was tragically killed in the line of duty while trying to apprehend an armed suspect. Deputy Brown had served in the Narcotics Unit and the K9 Unit with the Martin County Sheriff's Office and Williamston Police Department for 15 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and served in Desert Storm. He previously served with the North Carolina Department of Corrections and was a member of the PERT team as a sniper. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. In addition to Charlie’s employment to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, he volunteered many hours to educating children about living a “Drug Free” life. Charlie also spent a lot of time showing off his narcotics partner K-9 unit “H-2” a beautiful chocolate Labrador retriever. In what spare time he had, Charlie enjoyed cooking out with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, as well as hunting, fishing, and just about anything that involved being outdoors.

The Current goals and future activities of this foundation are to:
  • Educated and enlighten the community about the sacrifices that emergency responders make on a daily basis.
  • Allow membership to this foundation to individuals and businesses to support the emergency services community.
  • Develop an emergency services fund to purchase needed equipment for emergency services providers including fire departments, emergency medical service providers, and law enforcements departments. It is our hope that this foundation will assist in not only purchasing equipment, but to also help with providing some financial support for training and for helping families of emergency service providers who may be in need of financial assistance due to tragic incidents.
  • Create the “Charlie Brown Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award” and award to a deserving trooper, officer or deputy who promotes the character and dedication to their community and employer that Charlie showed.
  • Hold an Annual Gospel Concert – Awards Night to allow for a organized time for the community and emergency service providers to come together and honor Charlie and his ultimate sacrifice.
  • Provide two (2) $1000.00 scholarships to two Martin County High School seniors interetsed in pursuing a college degree in a public safety related field

This foundation intends to complete its goals financially through fundraising events and sponsorships from area community members and businesses. This foundation’s intent is to become the premiere charitable organization of Martin County and the State of North Carolina that is known its overwhelming support of emergency services personnel and agencies.
